Description

As a vivid example of what’s possible using a combination of two handheld 3D scanners, this 3-meter-long kayak was scanned and transformed into a highly-accurate, ready-for-VR 3D model. The 100% wireless Artec Leo captured the full geometry of the kayak in high-resolution color 3D in just a handful of minutes. After that, Space Spider zoomed in for submillimeter capture of dozens of high-detail components across the kayak’s multiple surfaces.

Everything was brought together in Artec Studio, while several soft, thin elements were modeled in ZBrush. The final results speak volumes about the synergy of multiple Artec 3D scanners for capturing large objects with multiple sections of challenging complexity.

How might such 3D models be incredibly useful? Let’s say you’re a scanning tech who’s been tasked with capturing the entire cockpit of a transport plane for a military-grade flight simulator. You have just one day to get everything scanned, processed, and exported to CAD. One tiny detail: the final results will undergo a close inspection by engineers and trained pilots, so everything needs to be perfect to the millimeter.

With Leo you can capture everything within the flight deck in less than an hour, then use Space Spider for any areas with more complex detail, such as toggle switches, tiny buttons, etc. That same afternoon, you can merge all the scans together in Artec Studio software for one breathtakingly accurate 3D model that’s ready for CAD.

3D printing settings

Layer Resolution: 0.2 mm for a balance of quality and speed.
