This off-road vehicle was manually assembled pretty much from scratch by its owner – and its journey didn’t end there. Measuring 3 by 2 by 1.5 meters and chock full of tiny details and awkward angles within, this buggy has brazenly cruised into digital ranks after it was completely scanned with Artec Leo – and for all the challenges it presented in shape, size, and complexity, this was all done in just over an hour.

Leo’s best features were put to full use for this buggy – the scanner’s wide scanning range and stable tracking allowed the capture of both its large frame and shape, and its details and smaller parts including complex elements such as thin frames or fasteners.

Due to the fact that the wireless Leo comes with an on-screen display and doesn’t need to be connected to a computer, it was easy and hassle-free to scan the entire interior, even in the case of hard-to-reach areas such as surfaces under the seats. A car lift was used to scan the vehicle’s underside, so no part was left unscanned. All in all, every part of this vehicle was captured well due to Leo’s outstanding ease of use paired with its penchant for both wide surfaces and fine details.

This huge amount of data was captured at a density of x7.11 in HD reconstruction mode, resulting in less noisy raw scans and consequently, a detailed mesh with a resolution of 0.7 mm.

3D printing settings


Layer Resolution: 0.2 mm for a balance of quality and speed.

Extruder Temperature: 200°C for PLA, 230°C for ABS. (Adjust for material.)

Print Speed: 50-60 mm/sec for optimal surface quality.

Supports: Use for complex parts, set density at 15-20%.

Bed Adhesion: Use glue or tape to prevent warping.

Infill: 20% for regular models, 100% for extra strength if needed.
